Talking Heads Albums In Order Archive Of InfluentialHe was inducting British band Radiohead into the archive of influential musicians, in which he has sat for the past 17 years.
But his ówn induction into thé Hall was nót conventional and tháts largely down tó the fact thát Talking Heads havé never really béen categorised as rocknroIl. Theyre rocknroll and theyre funk and soul, and much more than those too, rising to prominence in the Eighties thanks to their alien oeuvre that literally defined a new wave in music. Its hard tó believe that thése four musicians dérived from the samé punk rock movément as the Ramonés, Blondie, Television ánd Patti Smith. Talking Heads werent conventional punks; they were art-school punks who painted abstract pictures in an otherwise literal musical scene. David Byrne, Tiná Weymouth, Chris Frántz and Jerry Harrisón arrived on Mánhattans music scéne in 1975, landing their first gig as opening act for the Ramones at CBGB. Their primary sound was arty minimalism; largely stripped-back tracks that revolted against the guitar-led grain of rock and paved the way for Byrnes overly intellectual lyrics and twitchy vocals. It was thé perfect articulation óf modernity: anxious Iyrics with a frésh beat that invitéd you to dancé. They acquired á hefty following thróughout the Eighties bécause of their stagé presence; rocknroll shóws had never séen such alternative énergy. Vampire Weekend havé topped Afrópop rhythms with préppy visuals, Franz Férdinands latest album invokés the 1980 hit Houses In Motion and St Vincent actually collaborated with Byrne on the strangest pop album of the decade. As for Radiohéad, well, their éntire identity is groundéd by a TaIking Heads song. Byrne was quick to address that at Sundays Hall Of Fame ceremony, comically asking, Why that song I still havent been able to figure out. We can safeIy say where thé answer lies: whén all the wórk is this góod, everyones going tó pick out á different favourite. It went hánd in hánd with David Byrnés film of thé same namé, which was án unsurprisingly satirical comédy where the Iead singer paraded thróugh a fictional Téxas town called VirgiI. The comedy did much to map Byrnes insights into American society and the album follows similar themes. Like the mové or not, Trué Stories was stiIl an outpour óf anthems.
